BUYING GUIDE
How to choose the right stainless steel litter box
Three decisions. Get these right and you will pick the correct box on the first try: size, entry height, and rim vs rimless.
Decision 1: Size
Start here. A litter box that is too small is the top reason cats avoid it. The rule is simple: the box should be at least 1.5 times the length of your cat from nose to tail base.
For most adult cats (8-12 lbs), an 18 x 14 inch box is the minimum. This is the size of most standard litter boxes and it works for average cats.
For large cats (12-16 lbs), go to at least 20 x 16 inches. For cats over 16 lbs — Maine Coons, Ragdolls, large domestic shorthairs: look for 22 x 17 or bigger. The Petnf at 22 x 17 is the right choice for this group.
When in doubt, bigger is always better. Cats use a correctly sized box more consistently. The extra floor space is a small tradeoff for a cat that actually uses the box.
Decision 2: Entry height
Entry height is the height of the front wall: the wall a cat steps over to get in. Standard boxes are 5-7 inches high. That is fine for healthy adult cats but a real barrier for cats with arthritis or mobility problems.
Signs your cat is struggling with entry height: pausing at the box before stepping in, stepping in slowly, or starting to go outside the box near the entry. These are all signals the entry is too high.
For senior cats or cats with known joint issues, the Kitty Go Here has a 3.5-inch front entry. Cats who struggle with a standard box walk in and out without hesitation.
For young, healthy cats, taller walls (6-7 inches) are actually better because they reduce scatter. A cat that can jump easily prefers a box with walls high enough to dig in freely.
Decision 3: Rim vs rimless
A rim is a rolled edge along the top of the box walls. It catches litter that flies up during digging and drops it back in the box. If your cat is an active, vigorous digger, a rim makes a real difference in how much litter ends up on the floor.
The tradeoff: a rim takes slightly longer to clean because litter can pack into the fold. An extra 30 seconds of rinsing during weekly cleaning.
Choose rimmed if your cat digs hard and you are constantly cleaning up litter from the floor. The Slevoo is our rimmed pick.
Choose rimless if your cat is a gentle digger, is a senior cat, or you want the fastest cleaning routine. The iPrimio and Zibo are both rimless.
